Lake Street Dive have pushed the possibilities of pop music through their eclectic sound of soul, folk, jazz and classic pop while successfully continuing to avoid being defined by one genre.

According to the band’s website, “while making their new album Good Together, they reinforced a deep sense of purpose behind their output, often turning their attention to the many factors driving us apart today (e.g., unchecked technological growth, culturally imposed isolation, the cult of relentless self-optimization). Born from a mindset they refer to as “joyful rebellion,” Good Together arrives as a body of work both gloriously defiant and primed to inspire unbridled dancing and ecstatic singing-along.”

Lawrence the Band: The perfect opening set
Lawrence the Band opened the night for Lake Street Dive by welcoming fans to the Family Business Tour. They brought a clever set which resembled an office setup complete with office boxes, files, keyboards, coffee cups and an array of pens. The sibling duo of Clyde and Gracie Lawrence have powerful vocal range and are experts at leaning into their soul-pop and funk roots. They surrounded themselves with a trio of punchy horns, two guitarist and a traditional drum set up. Songs like 23 kept the audience swaying. The bittersweet track Misty Morning united the audience across the bridge of the shared human experience as the lyrics took us on a journey of looking back on a relationship.

I saw Lawrence a few years ago on a Sixthman floating music festival called Rock Boat. It was a joy to see their musical progression and experience their full band. The collaborative songs they performed with Lake Street Dive were outstanding. For more information check out their website.
