This past weekend Red Rocks Amphitheater had the honor of hosting two back-to-back nights for the 10th annual Rowdytown event hosted by its creator, Big Gigantic. Over the years this event has brought fans together from all ages to connect with one another through their love of music all while creating memories and having the time of their lives.
The night started with two brothers, (Zach and Charles Weinart) born here in Denver, Co, together their called MZG. The two share a connection from birth that has allowed them to simultaneously mix over one another creating their unique sound. Growing up side by side they started their musical careers in 2014 under the name MZG, an abbreviation of the scientific term, “monozygotic,” used to describe identical twins. Opening their set they played a variety of mixes that led up to “RedMercedes” by “Amine” and a teaser from their new mix with Big G titled “Energy”.
Second act on the bill for the night was no stranger to Colorado despite this being his first appearance at Red Rocks, Jantsen (Jantsen Robertson) spent most of his years growing up in Boulder, Co. Having the pleasure to experience his sets in the past, it’s safe to say he came ready for his first debut at the on the Rocks. Growing up in the music scene, he quickly found his own style, “Gutter Music” which quickly attracted the attention of other major artists such as Dirty Monkey and Griz. Jantsen performed the heaviest set of the night highlighting a range of his mixes that lead up to his newer tracks that are set to be released in the following weeks. With the night sky upon us, the visuals really started to appear during his set resembling Minoan temple designs that stole your focus away from your train of thought. Throughout the remainder of his set, he mixed a few fan favorites such as Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle”, a mix with Encore believed to be called “Vibrations”, and even mixed in some Twenty One Pilots “Heathens” before bringing his family out of a group photo before passing the stage of to MitiS.
The last opener of the night was an individual by the name of MitiS (Joseph Torre). Born and raised in Pennsylvania, MitiS found his groovy around 2010 combining electronic bass music with instruments such as the piano to make his own style/sound allowing his fans to recognize one of his songs from the moment it starts to play. He’s a perfect example for anyone doubting that EDM has room to grow as he pours his heart and soul into his craft and brings new life to the industry with his beautiful collaborations. Referencing, that Red Rocks likes it “Dirty”, MitiS started his set with some slower tempo tracks that quickly turned into some hardstyle. This was his third time performing at on the Rocks and was delighted to be back, bringing with him some trippy visuals that made the crowd feel as if they were floating around in Doctor Strange’s Muti-Verse. Mastering how to take the crowd on an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows, MitiS played songs like “This Could Be You”, a brand new track called “You’re the One”, “Don’t Look Down” and “Without Me”.
The time had finally come for Big Gigantic to take the stage! Doing so by having a guest appearance from MOONZz take the stage with some lovely vocals that introduced Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken. As Dominic grabbed his Saxophone and Jeremy sat at the Drums, the entire amphitheater echoed with screaming fans who were ready to get down for one final night of the 10th year annual reunion of Big G’s creation “Rowdytown”. For those who don’t know, Big Gigantic uses their talents to perform live music, playing the saxophone and drums as they mix in a variety of Dubstep, Electronic-Funk, and Jazz, mixed with both modern and classic Hip-Hop. Being restricted from performing live during the year or two, Big G strived to ensure this year’s Rowdytown was the biggest one yet. Striving to take the audience on a visual and auditory journey, they pulled together a team to help create some ridiculous visuals that absolutely blew us away. In addition to the stage setup, Big G brought a number of guest appearances to the Saturday night show that truly helped make this their biggest show yet, including fan’s favorite and Colorado local Griz, with Live vocals from Rozes, MOONZz, and Covex. They even extended their love by inviting MZG out to MC for a bit. Some songs they mixed together during their set were “Hips Swang”, The Little Things, All of Me Ft. Logic, Good Times Roll, The Little Things, You’re the One, Losing My Mind By Brooke Williams, and Second Time Ft Covex” before ending the night out with the final song on their newest album () titled “Love Unlimited”.
Red Rocks is known all around the world as one of the best venues to have ever been built and to have it in our backyard is an amazing honor that Big G has capitalized on by making it the home of their annual Rowdytown event, definitely a Colorado-based show. If you missed this year, don’t worry, they’re guaranteed to be back next year with a variety of shows in between.
