“Curses is a darker record, that sees Klassen mining the depths of mental illness with starkly beautiful honesty…” – The Line of Best Fit
“’Curses’ imparts a dense, looming pop sound, topped with bright melodies and vocals.” – Culture Collide
“Canadian singer-songwriter Jordan Klassen has already built up a healthy following thanks to his honest lyrics and the success of 2012’s Kindness EP.” – Paste Magazine
“Klassen takes both his emotion and imaginative insight and melds together poetic lyrics and melody into songs that are warm, meaningful and intimate.” – CBC Music
“Repentance has been keeping me company and providing a worthy soundtrack to my journey. I chose [“Piano Brother”] for the energetic ending, though nearly every song is a standout, most with a classic Sufjan-y vibe.” – Sam McLoughlin, Indie Shuffle
Klassen says, Curses is a collection of songs examining my own mental illness and reflecting on the common experiences I’ve found among my peers in it’s woes. While I often try to make sure some hope and brightness breaks through in my work, I allowed myself this record to really be honest about some of the darkness that’s shaped who I am.”
Curses is an assembly of brooding pop songs that continue in it’s predecessor’s exploration of mental illness and hushed vulnerability since his 2016 LP, Javelin. Writing about his life experiences is one of the essential elements in Jordan’s creative process – particularly events that he had deemed as his failures.
Jordan Klassen is a decorated songwriter in his own right who has spent more than a decade quietly crafting music that has been deemed ‘unsentimentally sincere’ and ‘whimsically hopeful’.
