American folk-rock band from Denton, Texas, Midlake, closed their nationwide tour, here in the one and only Denver, CO, at the nostalgic Bluebird Theater. After taking 8-9 years off from touring due to unhealthy emotions, they couldn’t wait to get back out doing what they love the most. Throughout this time frame, they still managed to create new music, publish solo tracks and create families.
This talented group consists of six band members starring lead singer Eric Pulido, guitarist Joey McClellan, keys/woodwinds Jesse Chandler, guitarist/keys Eric Bichleson, bassist Edgar Lee and drummer McKenzie Smith. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the open act Field Division was unable to attend the evening’s show, allowing for a full two-hour set from Midlake. Although this was a bummer, the band made up for it by connecting, laughing, and talking to the crowd throughout the entire show while leading up to some of their major hits such as Roscoe.
As the night progressed, they took a moment to reflect on all the music they’ve been so grateful to create together, all of which has led up to their new album “For The Sake of Bethel”. Playing their new hit “Meanwhile” they broke down the struggles that life has placed on us all and what it took to push through all the highs and lows that came along with their journey. Their next song “Noble” was one intended to show appreciation for drummers McKenzie Smiths son Noble that has some unfortunate health concerns. It inspired them to focus and strive through the tour reminding them of what they have waiting for them once they get home. The song starts off with a beautiful solo from Chandler that leads into a soft tone melody from Pulido.
Song after song, the band had time to touch base with the crowd making it one of the most sincere shows I’ve ever attended. From flute solos by Chandler, whammy bar action from McClellan, to head banding tempos from drummer Smith the band flows with almost perfect harmony.
Words from lead singer Pulido, “Coming off the Hallmark holiday, Father’s Day, Denver feels like their home away from home, and couldn’t have been a better place to end their tour”. Ending the night off, they gave praise to the S7 Management (Local from Denver, CO) thanking them for helping them live their dreams as “People that give a Damn”.
If you missed out on this go-around, don’t worry they’ll definitely be back for more. In addition, Midlake will be headed home to relax and regroup prior to hitting the road again later as they set off to perform in a number of upcoming festivals across the seas.
