Nashville-based band, Arts Fishing Club announces their first full-length album, Rothko Sky due June 16, and shares the video for the opening track, “foster falls” out today. [Stream/Enjoy].

The single gets its title from the famed cascade, Foster Falls in Tennessee. In discussing the deeper meaning of the song, frontman Christopher Kessenich said, “foster falls is a real waterfall and my favorite place to camp in Tennessee. The song is a true story of a first overnight date. In the barrenness of the camping, we began to fall for each other. Camping brings out simplicity and rawness in life. All there is to do is survive, cook over a fire, and enjoy each other’s company. Desolate conditions make it immediately clear if you connect with someone.

The song title is a play on words. Just like a waterfall rushing over the edge, there is no stopping, no denying the current of falling in love.  Even if you want to get out and protect your heart and emotions, sometimes you’re simply swept off the edge.  There is something so raw and human and good about losing all control to love like that,”  he concludes.

The album, Rothko Sky charts the autobiographical yet hugely relatable arc of a passionate, volatile romance. Twinkling with cultured musicality, innate melodicism, and resonant imagery, its ten alt-flecked tracks dance, cry, and ultimately surrender to our universal love of falling in love.

“It starts with a surge of starry-eyed passion, then hits a wall and gets ripped back to reality,” frontman Christopher Kessenich explained. “Then the second half of the record fluctuates back and forth between love, sex, pain, and self-reflection.”

The new single, “foster falls” follows the already-released song, “space cow” from this record that also includes the wistful, shuffling “doug song” which came to Kessenich in one epiphanic breath while watching Doug, a friend’s dog. “I was sitting in silence with Doug and all of these ‘truths’ that had been ringing in my ear for a long time came clear to me,” he recalled. The keys-caressed, “heart will remain” was written the night after the first date experience in “foster falls,” walking in the snow, a giddy fever dream of feelings and futures, spoken and sensed.

Tracked live, with minimal overdubs, by producer Thad Kopec at his Nashville studio, Rothko Sky (a reference to abstract artist Mark Rothko) for the first time captures Arts Fishing Club’s irresistibly energized live shows on record, with every listener feeling like part of the performance and the band’s seasoned musicianship strictly serving the songs. Restrained yet vivacious arrangements frame the nuanced grain of Kessenich’s vocals, his storytelling embroidered with taut guitars, tastefully propulsive beats, and acoustic instruments flickering in and out of focus.

“Our favorite line on the record is from the song, ‘arizona,’ that reads: I hope you lay yourself down between a lover and a Rothko Sky,” says Kessenich. “It’s a line of letting go, giving thanks for a relationship but truly hoping that the other person finds complete and utter bliss between a lover and a Rothko Sky.  The image of a Rothko Sky is powerful.  His paintings carry weight but they aren’t so far from reality. It’s almost possible to witness a Rothko Sky. The line hopes that the ex-lover finds peace and beauty.”

What frontman, Christopher Kessenich describes as his “semi-solo project,” Arts Fishing Club has earned a reputation for incredible energetic live shows since forming in 2016. Drawing a revolving lineup from a core pool of top Nashville talent, they released their 2018 debut EP, Human – I, and a string of singles with high praise from NPR, American Songwriter, The Boot, PopDust, Atwood Magazine, and more. Frequently placed in a sonic world with the likes of Mt. Joy, Caamp, and Wilderado, their 2023 full-length album, Rothko Sky finds the band cementing a signature sound that increasingly favors succinct song structures and alt-rock instrumentation alongside an accomplished, jam-band joy in their craft.

“You go out every single day casting, coming up empty-handed, casting, coming up empty-handed,” said Kessenich referring to Arts Fishing Club’s name and philosophy. “But it’s not about catching the big fish – it’s about going on a crazy adventure with people that you love.”
